Jefferson Still Lives

Jefferson beats Adams…

On July 4, 1826, Thomas Jefferson famously shuffled off this mortal coil on the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, besting John Adams who died later in the day.

The relationship between the two, which had been more than a little contentious at times, seemed to have mellowed with age. With their individual missions complete, the two enjoyed cordial correspondences to the end of their lives. Adams, seemingly aware that both he and TJ were scheduled to check out that day, uttered his famous last words

“Jefferson still lives”
